Windows NT USB Drivers & Devices

Even though Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 retired in late 2001, there is still a growing interest in USB support for this platform. This list provides you with free solutions offered by enthusiastic USB engineers and commerical products developed by driver software companies. Most of these drivers are free so you are welcome to try them, but make sure you have Service Pack 6 installed and the testbed isn't a multi-processor system. Most importantly, don't mix and match these drivers.

3rd Party Windows NT 4.0 USB Support
Woodhead's USB Driver Supports EHCI and USB 2.0 Devices
In 2004, Woodhead from China posted a set of USB driver for Windows NT 4.0 that supports one or more UHCI USB 1.1 host controllers. In addition, he has provided EHCI driver, marking it the first NT driver to support Hi-Speed USB devices, including hubs, flash drives and hard drives, except for isochronous devices.
EdgeUSB Windows NT 4.0 USB Stack Specifications
Inside Out Networks posted its specification for its EdgeUSB Windows NT 4.0 USB Stack. Basically, this page is intended for developers and companies that want to outsource special USB development to this company. For example, HP requested Inside Out Networks to develop a driver for its PhotoSmart S20 scanner (now discontinued).
IBM Windows NT 4.0 for ThinkPad A-, R-, T-, X-series Notebooks
IBM in Sept. 2002 posted Windows NT 4.0 SP6 USB driver that enables several IBM Portable Disk Drives, an IBM USB Portable CD-ROM drive, Microsoft USB Intelli-Mouse and Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro. But users are required to install 'IBM ThinkPad Utility for Windows NT 4.0' for suspend/resume power management.
Dell's NT 4.0 USB HID, MSC & Printer Driver
In late 2003, Dell also released an official USB tool (Version A01) that works with its Latitude D400 and D600-series. The installer comes with drivers including USB stack, USB HID for mice and keyboards, USB hub and USB Mass Storage Compliant devices.
BSquare's NT USB Driver for Pocket PC 2002
BSquare also has added USB capability to Windows NT 4.0. Their solution supports keyborads, mice, printers, various Pocket PC 2002 PDAs and USB hubs. It claims there's no support for storage, scanners and cameras; the driver costs $39.95 per client.
Jungo WinDriver USB for NT
While not an end-user driver, Jungo's utility automates and simplifies USB device drivers for Windows NT. It supports all four USB traffic: control, bulk, interrupt and isochronous. Additional benefits include cross-platform support for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP. However, the drivers will not take advantage of multiple CPUs.
USB Products Supporting NT 4.0 Out of the Box
USB Flash Drive - DiskOnKey
M-Systems pioneered the first integrated USB storage using with NAND memory. Called DiskOnKey, the USB flash drive gets its own propertiary Windows NT 4.0 USB driver, which is unfortunately being pulled from DOK website earlier this year. You can download it here.
USB Extender - Inside Out Networks AnywhereUSB
A two-part solution, utilizing USB hardware and redirector software, is attached via RJ-45 to the Ethernet and provides five downstream USB ports to which you can connect Edgeport USB converters, Watchport/V USB Camera and various devices that use asynchronous or bulk transmission.
USB NIC Adapter - Inside Out Networks Wavespeed/LAN
The external 802.11b NIC card, powered by USB bus, is perhaps the only wireless USB adapter that supports Windows NT 4.0 out of the box.
USB Video - Inside Out Networks Watchport/V
The first USB desktop camera with Windows NT 4.0 support. It is now touted as 'environmental monitoring' solution that can send phone & email alerts to users when motion is detected.
