XCD??? DVD with a USB Plug

  October 17th, 2006

WE RECOMMEND
A patent has been filed for a new type of storage media called XCD. An XCD is about the thickness of current optical disks and can still be played in any normal optical drive. The interesting part of the invention is that the XCD also has a smart card portion with its own memory and processing components embedded in the plastic of the disc and the outer edge of the disc is cut away with a USB connector protruding for direct connection to the PC via USB. The developer of the technology is a company called Aladdin and they envision the disks being used to lock content onto the disc it was sold on. Basically you would have the music you buy on the disc surface and the smart card would hold encryption keys required to play the music on a PC.
