USB Hard Drive Dock Grows a Fan

USB Hard Drive Dock Grows a Fan

The value of a HDD USB rack is the convenience of being able to instantly swap between 3.5" or 2.5" SATA hard drives. There isn't a chassis enclosing the drive, but one third of the SATA is still inside the dock. This design however can still trap a lot of heat inside. If this makes you uncomfortable, this so-called next generation USB SATA dock comes with a fan that should help out with the heat dissipation.

The fan itself spins at 1,800rpm and sucks air out from where most of the heat is generated. With fan kicking in and drive spinning at 7,200rpm, USB isn't going to handle the load so an AC adapter is included to supply the extra juice. There are actually a few unlabeled switches; we believe they have something to do with adjusting the fan speed. The fan dock now retails for $65, but the original can be had for for $45 should you find the extra cooling mechanism unnecessary.
