While laptop coolers are pretty much a dime a dozen, one characteristic they all share is the fact that they are not really self standing devices. Sure some such as the
Logitech N700 reviewed back are dual purpose and can be used on you lap, but even here they need
something to be laid on. For the most part, this means you stick the Thanko laptop cooler on a desk and then place your laptop on the cooler. Plug in the fan's USB power supply cable and you are off and running. What if the desk itself was also a laptop cooler?
This appears to be the genius and down right innovative idea behind the
Thanko gadget as it really is a desk and laptop cooler all in one. This is actually more a TV tray than secretary desk as it is only a couple inches high, but this sounds ideal for those times when you are lying in bed and don't want to get burnt. As an added bonus, this cooler desk not only comes with an integrated fan powered off your laptop's USB port, but the USB cable also provides data and power to an integrated 4-port USB hub. Additionally, it also comes with a USB LED lamp (which can also be powered by 4 AA batteries) and the whole works folds flat into about a 6cm, ultra-portable rectangular box, allowing for easy storage near anywhere. About the only thing missing is integrated speakers. Otherwise it really would be the perfect accessory for watching movies on your laptop while in bed. Though to be honest, another caveat is that this $47'ish device only appears to be available in Japan.
