Apple received a lot of attention after putting the iPhone 18 Pro Max on sale in September 2026, just nine days after announcing it. Side by side, with their 6.9-inch OLED screens, it’s hard to tell apart from the 17 Pro Max. But never judge a book by its cover, as the differences lie inside.

What are the key differences between the iPhone and the iPhone Pro Max

In the age of AI, the chip matters more than ever. The 18 Pro Max has the A20 Pro while the 17 Pro Max has the A19 Pro. Apple claims up to 40% better sustained performance. Sustained, as in an hour of gaming or a long 4K export. That’s a heck of a jump.

For those who believe all flagships are “good enough”, battery life then becomes their main buy factor. Apple’s specifications rate the 18 Pro Max for up to 45 hours of video playback vs 39 hours for the 17 Pro Max. Of course, both drop a few hours when it’s streamed, but that’s a 6 hour improvement.

Charging is now catching up to some of its Android counterparts, with some reports of a 50% top-up in about 15 minutes (down from ~20). That does mean it’s 16g heavier now though.

The cameras are what people watch reviews of, and here it’s close. Apple lists three 48MP rear lenses on both and a 4x telephoto, and a 12MP 8x sensor-crop (optical-quality) zoom. This is true of both phones. The main change is a new variable aperture on the main camera.

Storage, as always, is a matter of what model you want to pay for (256GB to 2TB). This is where you can save a lot of money, assuming you make good use of the cloud.

Which iPhone is better, 17 Pro Max or 18 Pro Max?

The 18 Pro Max is of course an improvement, but how much depends on your priorities. Back Market is a leading global marketplace for verified refurbished electronics, offering an alternative for those who want a premium iPhone without necessarily paying the price of a brand-new model. Back Market lists the iPhone 17 Pro Max with 256GB at just over the thousand-dollar mark in Fair condition at the time of writing (remember, this is before Black Friday) versus $1,199 new.

Now remember, the iPhone Pro Max 18 was an official US release price of $1,299.00 at Apple directly. Given that the 17 Pro Max has five years of guaranteed updates (likely more), many opt to save a few hundred bucks. But, on the other hand, the better chip may well be its most important upgrade.

The newer phone is less tested, and while you’re in safe hands with Apple, Apple has confirmed that some 18 Pro Max units on AT&T can lose cellular service. Some reports show crackling speakers and freezes too.

Like most flagship releases, it’s rarely worth upgrading from last year’s to this year’s version. But, if you’re running an iPhone 14 and have been looking for an upgrade, you may find an iPhone 18 Pro Max to be worth the extra money when buying from Apple. However, once the 18 Pro Max hits the refurbished market, if you’re chasing value for money, the refurbished 17 Pro Max could fall in price soon after – this is often the pattern.

In other words, if you’re going new, go for the latest flagship. If you’re going for value, go refurbished and for last year’s flagship.
