Belkin USB Network Hub - Wireless Ready

  May 16th, 2007

WE RECOMMEND

USB router isn't anything new. We've seen offerings like from Icron, Synology, Silex. Similar products targeted at the sub-$100 market exclusively connect to Ethernet since WiFi speeds just won't cut it. When 802.11n comes along, Belkin picks it for its aptly named USB Network Hub. Its 'special caching techniques' allow for support of Hi-Speed USB peripherals in addition to isochronous transfers at Full-Speed (12Mbps), meaning USB webcams, TV tuners and speakers are going wireless.

In theory, you can connect up to 5 video cameras (The hub has 5 ports) to the Network Hub and set up remote video surveillance without a costly IP cam. Only 802.11n can carry this kind of bandwidth burden. The Belkin hub also handles NAS duty, but your PC is tricked into thinking there's a direct connection with the remote USB HDD. So this is useful for tune syncing with iPod. This trick will also work on scanners and MFPs as well. So, on paper, this seems to be the more practical choice over its UWB cousin.
