Logitech Z-10 USB speakers feature a backlight display for track information and full media touch-sensitive controls. No sub is required with bi-amp design that Logitech claims gives full, rich sound without the need for a separate sub. There also are buttons for Internet radio presets. A headphone jack is built in for times when you need discrete listening. An auxiliary input also allows you to play your MP3 player back through the speakers. If you and your laptop are well traveled, but you want to listed to your tunes or watch movies with better sound, the XT2 may be the option you need. The speakers even include a built in mic for online gaming and VOIP phone calls. The Altec Lansing XT2 speaker system can be fully USB powered or you can use the included AC adapter for the optional audio boost. The built in mic has feedback reduction built in to enhance voice quality and a carry case is included.  For those of us who require better audio from our laptops while on the road, Logitech has developed the V20 Notebook Speakers. These "little" babies are powered and receive data over a single USB connection, making connections simple and neat. Sound is transmitted by a combination of a 2" high excursion dynamic driver and a 3" passive radiator (called a 'pressure driver' by Logitech).

You will not find a shortage of USB surround sound headphones and adapters, but no one has released a 5.1 speaker set for this digital interface until Altec Lansing. The new FX5051 is probably the only 5.1 surround sound system that relies entirely on USB connection. That means you will not be able to plug in the optical output from your X-Box 360 to the the X5051. There are an auxiliary port and headphone jack but they are stereo input and output respectively.  The new Companion 5 speaker system uses all the Bose tricks for sound quality and carries the price tag you expect form Bose as well. At an MSRP of $399 for the three piece 2.1 speaker set, they had better sound really good. Connecting the entire set requires only one USB plug, similar to the Altec Lansing FX5051. That means no sound card is required. Bose tries to bring 5.1 sound quality to a 2.1 speaker set via their TrueSpace tech.
