Law Enforcement Officials and Covert Operatives may be borrowing a little Time Lord technology in the near future. Cyber-Security and Forensic experts, Harris, have unveiled a flash drive made to search and catalog targeted information on suspect computers. The
BlackJack USB drive can be configured to search for specific data or types of data with a special configuration utility. The drives are meant for Windows based computers and unless they have some sort of bootable technology they may be relegated to Windows XP. The drives are said to boot in less than 3 seconds, we're not sure if that means they launch their snooping programs or if they are running a boot-able OS image. The BlackJack has LED indicators that alert the operator whether the software has found what it was looking for.
While we aren't likely to get too many details about how the BlackJack manages to launch itself, new security measures may make its job difficult. Windows 7 doesn't allow autorun anymore, and USB boot options aren't always possible, especially with BIOS passwords in place. Without autorun, you would have to launch the software manually from the keyboard which makes indicator lights on the drive a bit silly. Since it's coming from Harris, we're pretty sure they've found some creative work-arounds for these pesky details. Keep your noses clean kids, big brother is getting really high-tech now.
